This week all the year 5 kids went to the year five retreat. We left school at 9:00 am and went to Saint Francis Retreat Centre. When we got there we went straight to the Fireplace Room. Where we learnt what we were going to do for the day. First, we got a leaf and we had to find a matching leaf. Then in groups, we did a treasure hunt but the twist was that we all had to hold onto some cloth for the entire hunt but my team won and we left Saint Francis retreat centre at 2:00.pm and I loved the retreat.
I am a Year 6 at Good Shepherd School in Auckland. I am in Room 6 and my Teacher is Miss Down.

Graduation Mass
Yesterday in school we had Graduation mass. It was about 2&1/2 hours long. It was quite sad for me because so many of my friends are leaving this year ðŸ˜. The year sixes performed a dance it was really good. Afterwards, I went to the morning star and there I met Otis.T, Molly.F, Maggie and Liam we all shared each other's food we played some tag and then we parted ways.
Sherbet!!
This week in school we did a sherbet experiment where we got to make sherbet but we had to eat straight baking soda first and it tasted like rotten fish. We also had to eat citric acid tartaric acid and icing sugar. My best sherbet combo was 1&1/2 teaspoon of TA 2&1/2 IS 1 CA and 1 BS. Some other people did straight icing sugar and straight baking soda😧. And that was the sherbet experiment.

persuasive
This week in school we did persuasive writing. Here is mine:
Why The New Star Wars Movies Are Trash!
Why The New Star Wars Movies Are Trash!
So Star Wars, you probably know about it. It is definitely the best sci-fi movie series ever. But here's my argument why the newer movies are trash.
Firstly Snoke the all-powerful and mysterious leader of the First Order. We know almost nothing about him he is the most mysterious character ever like, who is he? is he old? is he human? So do you think Snoke should be more mysterious or have more origin?
Secondly, the plot has holes like where did the first order get all there funding to make there ships and weapons like Star-killer base and why did the New Republic demilitarize.
Lastly, every character is a copy of another character Rey= Luke, because Rey lives on a desert planet find a droid and saves the day. Poe = Leia, because Poe sends a droid with information to a desert planet and gets captured by the Sith. Finn=Han because he rescues Poe/Leia from the sith leaves the good guys comes back at the last second and helps save the day.
So in conclusion now you must hate the new Star Wars movies.
So you must like my work now.

Spud Guns
This week we made spud guns. Most of ours didn't work. But a couple of ours worked. The method that we used to make the spud guns was that we got a potato and lodged straws right into the potato and if we got some potato we used a bamboo stick to push all of the potato out and if we created enough tension we could push it out so hard i could create smoke but that didn't happen😠and that was the spud gun experiment.

Bird Beak
This week in school we did a science experiment on bird beaks. It was so fun and we got to eat the lollies at the end.
We learned about the different bird beaks by using forceps to represent them. Then we had to find out which beak type was best for the different food types. The food groups were skittles for hard food, gummy worms for soft food and paper for leaves. My group consisted of Liam Tupou Ethan Nathaniel and Molly H. we got to eat the skittles and gummy worms and I loved that experiment.

Science
In science, we learned about animal adaptations and how it helps them survive in tough environments. Here is some example. Bears have heaps of fur to keep them warm and snakes have hard scaly skin to keep them from burning. Adaptions can vary from camouflage to claws. Adaptations are amazing!

Mini BB fair
This week in school we had a mini fair. It was called the Mini BB fair. The reason it had 2 Bs is because we were only selling books and baking. My friend Xavier and I were on one of the baking stalls. The rest of the school council and I were the ones who organised it. We thought the fair was a good idea because we wanted to get a mural on the power box outside the school. We asked kids to bring in old books and baking. Some of the baking was really cool and colourful. I even managed to snag a rainbow cupcake. We needed to raise $670 for the mural and we raised $750! We were really happy that we raised enough money and can’t wait to see how the mural looks.

Seal
In class we did explanation writing I did mine on seals.
Seals
What are some of the fiercest and the cutest mammals alive? The carnivorous Seal!So did know this whatever the case read on.
Seal parents go out and hunt fish and other sea creature. The biggest Seal is the southern elephant Seal. It can grow to 6.09 metres and the smallest is the ringed Seal which is only 1.5 metres long. They are carnivores and eat small fish such as rock fish herring and salmon. They are the biggest carnivores alive.Seals live in the antarctic Seals have quite a lot of blubber to keep them nice and toasty.Seals have white or black fur. When Seals are born they are fed fattening milk to gain all their blubber. When they are 3-7 years old they mate. Then the females give birth after 9-12 months.
Seals are flourishing and are not endangered at all. :)
Seals are amazing creatures don't you think.

Speeches
At school, we did speeches we do speeches because it teaches us public speaking. Mine was about A.I (artificial intelligence) stealing our jobs. I hope you enjoy reading it.
You might think that robots and technology are cool and amazing. Robots are doing amazing things like dismantling bombs in countries and being used in complex operations. Technology lets us play games like Fortnite and Minecraft together - letting us pretend to be somewhere and play together- even when we aren’t in the same house, city or country. It lets us connect with people all over the world. But would you still think it was amazing if robots or technology took over people’s jobs, took over your parent’s jobs?
|
People are saying that new technologies and artificial intelligence or AI as they call it for short will take over simple processing jobs. Jobs like repetitive factory work and order taking jobs like cashiers at restaurants. You can already go to MacDonalds and order using a machine and visa paywave – no need to talk to a person.
But they will not only take over simple processing jobs as the technology gets more complicated the machines will also take over more complicated process jobs like legal work, accounting and medicine
|
People are starting to worry that A.I. will do their jobs better than they can, so they are scared that they will lose their jobs.
But this is not the first time that people have had this worry. Imagine back in the days when people travelled by horse and cart - there were jobs for cart drivers, cart builders, and horse shoemakers, etc. Then suddenly along came this new technology that we all know today as the car….. People were worried about their jobs back then too. What would those cart drivers and builders do now?
|
They learned new skills and got new jobs. Because with new technology – new jobs are created. Towns no longer needed a cart builder but they needed a mechanic, and rich people wanted car drivers. As old jobs went through the introduction of new technology, new jobs arose.
|
So what does this all mean for people working today? What are the long term effects of this new technology? Will the new technology mean less jobs and because of this less money, which will lead to more of us living on the streets?
I think it will be good and bad. For those that want to learn new skills, they will be fine and be working in jobs they may even prefer in the future. For others it will not be so easy and I think they will find it hard to get work because they don’t have the right skills for the new jobs.
But what do you think?

What do You think of it is it good or is it bad? | ||
